Today we highlight one of our free courses – The New Updated USA DOT Hours of Service Course!

Trucks are on the road 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is therefore imperative that truck drivers are knowledgeable, skilled, and committed to maintaining the safety of everyone on the road and are aware of the state regulations in their relevant travel jurisdiction. That's why the Department of Transportation (DOT) has established Hours-of-Service regulations for commercial drivers who transport both property and passengers. By limiting how much time drivers can spend behind the wheel, we can reduce fatigue, which can lead to accidents, injuries, and even death. Hours of service rules have been created after a long history of deadly accidents that could/should have been prevented. To some of the old timers out there that carried more than one set of logbooks or know how to jimmy a carbon paper reader card with a paper match book … you know why the rules were put in place … just because you were one of the lucky ones who got away with it.  In this case – the government really is here to help (although it makes me cringe to even write those words).

Being alert keeps everyone safer as we drive past schools, hospitals and everyday people.  Did you know that even missing as little as 1.5 hours can have an impact on how you feel, causing short-term problems like:

  • Lack of alertness.
  • Memory problems.
  • Moodiness and agitation (and the last thing anyone needs is an angry truck driver in heavy traffic – am I right?).
  • Blurred vision
  • Memory lapse and
  • Poor reaction times

Workhub has now created its own fully comprehensive US Hours of Service course.  If you know what a logbook is or have used an electronic driver monitoring system is – then you might find all this interesting or at least mandatory.  In this 20-minute course we outline regulations enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that apply to drivers involved in American interstate commerce. The lesson provides commercial motor vehicle drivers a basic awareness of:

  • Applicable DOT regulations
  • 14-hour duty and 11-hour driving limits
  • 60-hour 7-day limits
  • 70-hour 8-day limits
  • And sleeper berth provisions

This course is presented in HD quality with options to view in your browser window or full screen with an option to watch in a lower resolution. That means smooth playback wherever you’re working. This, along with closed captions, downloadable handouts, and infographics, will ensure that your workers’ learning experience is both engaging and rewarding.
